Erythrina herbacea from Kate south carolina

Heart shaped leaves
Flowers kinda like the red yucca but it’s not one
Growing roadside by savannah national wildlife refuge in south carolina.
Small plant, grass like with heart shaped leaves. Green leaves and single pedal red flowers. Wildflower that blooms in may.

Hi Kate,

while the photo here would not normally allow the identification of this plant, the others you sent of the flowers make it certain that this is Erythrina herbacea, the Coralbean. The seeds are bright red in the fruits later in the season. I understand that they can be quite poisonous if eaten. The leaves normally have 3 leaflets, not one as this photo shows.  See some internet images for the rest of the plant.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven R. Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
