Erythrina herbacea from JordanSC

Next to marsh in Rockville. Hummingbirds like it

Hi Jordan,

this is an attractive type of bean called coral bean, Erythrina herbacea. The beans when ripe are exposed and are a bright red color.  However, as with most wild red beans, they are very toxic.  In fact, the entire plant is poisonous to people if eaten.  Yet it is a wonderful wildflower, and it does attract hummingbirds. In the tropics, Erythrina species are usually trees.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
