An elderberry from Joel in Upstate South Carolina

Posted on |

This is a tall (6 foot) rather spindly plant growing near our house.
Unfortunately it is past bloom, but I was hoping you might still be able to identify it.
Thanks!

Hi Joel,

your shrub is an elderberry, Sambucus canadensis.  The fruits are ripe after they turn dark ink-purple, and they have been used for various food preparations such as jellies.  It is native – the birds probably dropped the seed there.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
