Eileen in SC

Near a farm pond out in a cow pasture. In upstate SC about 2 miles above the North Pacolet River in the Cannons Campground Community. The colors were pretty.

Hi Eileen,

your plant is a young example of Lycopus, the water horehound, in the mint family.  I’m not positive as to the species, but it is most likely Lycopus virginicus.  They often have purplish color when they first come up, and this usually turns green some time later.  Even though this is a mint, it doesn’t smell like one.
