Coreopsis verticillata from Mary, SC

Posted on |

Is this a relative of a sunflower of some type, grown in dry, sandy soil?

Hi Mary,

this is related to the sunflower, but is a different genus – it is Coreopsis verticillata, the threadleaf coreopsis, a very nice native wildflower found mostly in the sandhills in South Carolina – but also a favorite cultivated plant in gardens.  This is certainly the wild form, and one that is not too common in our state. Sunflower is the genus Helianthus.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
