Cirsium horridulum from Dixie South Carolina

Can you tell me the name of this wild flower?

Hi Dixie,

your wildflower is a thistle, most likely the bristly thistle or bull thistle, Cirsium horridulum. I didn’t see the whole plant, so I cannot be 100 % certain. Cirsium horridulum has a rosette of very prickly leaves on the ground in a circle at the base of the stem. It is quite common in pastures and roadsides. Yours is past flower with the hairs on the seeds showing.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
