Chimaphila maculata from Jane in SC

Posted on |

Small woodland plant found in Dupont Forest.
It was in dappled shade. It is approximately 2 to 3
Inches high. It has a white vein running from the tip
to the base with smaller white veins on the sides.

Hi Jane,

your plant is called flowering wintergreen, Chimaphila maculata. It is rather common in somewhat dry open woodlands especially with pines. Also in the picture there seems to be part of a dewberry plant, Rubus trivialis.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
