Callisia from Anng in South Carolina

Posted on |

This is a common houseplant but I don’t remember the name. What I am curious about is the long shoot that continues to grow straight up. I’ve had the plant for 10 years and it’s never done this.

Hi Anng [?],

your houseplant is called Callisia fragrans, and is related to ‘wandering jew’ and some other common houseplants.  I grow this also, and usually grow it in a hanging basket because it produces offshoots on stolons that grow into new plants, and left on, the whole basket becomes very attractive like its relative, the spider plant [Chlorophytum].  The flowers on that erect stalk will be white, interesting but not very attractive, mostly a cluster of stamens in appearance.  Have fun!

Sincerely,
