Briza minor from Vickey in SC

Hi Dr. Hill!

I can’t find anything close to this on the namethatplant site. I know it’s some kind of grass, but what – I don’t know. It’s my best mystery find of spring so far. Can you please tell me what it is, please? I’ve never seen anything like it before.

Thank you!

Hi Vickey,

this is an interesting European rather ornamental grass named Briza minor, the quaking grass. It is not often seen in this part of the country. It is one of the smaller quaking grasses, and Briza maxima has much larger more impressive spikelets, the flower parts. Both these and a few other species are often dried for decorative arrangements.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
