Black Haw from Diane, SC

Posted on |

This plant was in shade at the edge of a wooded area for many years but seems to flourish in full sun (we recently thinned the area). It appears to be a bush but could be a small tree, but that’s just a guess at this point in its growth. Photo is from mid-April. No further information is available yet as to flowers or fruit. Thanks in advance.

Hi Diane,

your mystery shrub appears to be a Black Haw, Viburnum prunifolium, a rather widely-distributed shrub to small tree in our area.  The leaves are usually flatter than the ones you show, but it still seems to fit this image well.  It can have attractive flower clusters like the cultivated viburnums.  You can find out more about this plant here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viburnum_prunifolium

Thanks for asking!
