Aristida oligantha from Mary, SC

What is this whispy looking grass that is now growing in dry, sandy soil?

Hi Mary,

this is a rather common annual grass in poor nutrient deficient soils.  It is called Aristida oligantha, one of the three-awn grasses, sometimes called poverty grass. Livestock will usually not eat it because the bristles can get stuck in their noses. It is widespread and apparently native.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
