Another Helianthus from Crystal in SC

Posted on |

Roadside. Upland conditions. Leaves stem glaborous. Flowers 1.5″-2″.

Hi Crystal,

this is another of the difficult perennial sunflowers, genus Helianthus. Probably different from the other one you submitted, and it could key out to Helianthus giganteus because I see so many alternate leaves. You state that the stems are glabrous, but I see pubescence on the stems. We are left with most of the same possibilities as in the other Helianthus for which you sent images.

Again, sorry I cannot be of  more help. One would need the plant in hand and several good identification keys.

Sincerely,

Steven Hill, Ph.D., Botanist SCNPS
