An unusual Spring Gentian from Chris in SC

Growing in a bottomland hardwood forest.

Hi Chris,

this is one of my favorite South Carolina plants, surprisingly a kind of gentian.  It is Obolaria virginica, the pennywort, that appears to be a saprophyte – relying on fungi to help it get its nutrients.  Because of this special dependence, it is very difficult to transplant into a new area. A good find!

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, SCNPS
