An invasive privet shrub from Ethel Renew in Upstate SC, and recommended publication

Posted on |

This shrub has been growing in my backyard for a few years. We are trying to decide if we should remove it since we just planted some cleyeras and want them to fill in for more privacy in the yard.

Hi Ethel,

I would not recommend keeping this shrub, which is the invasive Chinese privet, Ligustrum sinensis. The birds carry the berries round and they are spreading everywhere, displacing our native plants. For anyone interested in South Carolina invasive plants, I suggest the publication: https://www.se-eppc.org/southcarolina/Publications/InvasivePlantsBooklet.pdf

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven R. Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
