Alcea rosea from Nancy in SC

Last summer I thought this could be a squash plant but it isn’t viney. It’s stayed green all winter. A neighbor suggested it could be dollar weed. What do you think?

Hi Nancy,

I’m rather certain that this is a hollyhock plant, Alcea rosea. It is a European plant, much planted, with large attractive flowers, in the Malvaceae – the mallow family.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
