Acalypha rhomboidea from DianeP, SC

Hi, Dr. Hill,
I don’t want your skills to get rusty during winter, so I’m seeking identification of a pond-side plant that I photographed Sept. 27. It’s in the fall line area of SC, growing at the water’s edge of a rural pond in full sun.
Thanks,
Diane

Hi Diane!

your plant is not strictly a pond plant, it is a plant common in rather disturbed areas, including pond margins.  It is Acalypha rhomboidea, the common 3-seeded Mercury, in the Euphorbiaceae, an annual. Excellent pictures, as usual!

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
