A Xyris from Mary, SC

Posted on |

What is this tiny yellow flower, blooming in bunches grown in dry, sandy soil?

Hi Mary,

this is one of the many species of Xyris, yellow-eyed grass, that is common in wet boggy areas. There is also a Rhexia, meadow beauty, in one of the pictures you sent, a very common associate. These areas can occasionally dry, but most of the year they are wet. I’m afraid I cannot determine the species, but it is one of the smaller ones.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
