A Rumex from Connie in SC

Posted on |

Grows every year near rabbit hutches and chick brooders. Near wood line on relatively high ground that is close to a lower, damp area. Located in SE South Carolina near Hilton Head Island.

Hi Connie,

this is one of several species called ‘dock’. Most likely this is Rumex obtusifolius, though Rumex crispus is also rather common, but its leaves are not quite so wide. Both people and animals have been known to eat this plant, but it is usually very bitter.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D, Botanist, SCNPS
