A reddish Aesculus from Janeen in SC

Posted on |

It’s a vine, in the shade, in a natural area near a little creek. It’s blooming now, March 30th. Leaves are in 5 leaf clusters. The leaf stems are red.

Hi Janeen,

it actually is not a vine but is a shrub to small tree. I’m not sure exactly where you are, but if you are in the upstate, it is Aesculus sylvestris, the woodland buckeye; if you are close to the coast it is Aesculus pavia, the red buckeye.  It looks more like the former to me. These also hybridize it seems.

Sorry for the delay, something has failed with the software and I have not been receiving these notices.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
