A probable privet from Jordan in SC

Posted on |

I believe that this is a shrub. The leaves are oval shaped with a slightly pointed end. The stem is brown and the leaves are green. It is growing in a small forest-like area. In the area of the shrub there is moderate rainfall. I look forward to your response.

Jordan,

this appears to be one of the cultivated [or escaped] privets, probably Ligustrum japonicum or a similar species.  They are often grown as hedges, and have blueish berries that are spread by birds.  It is not native.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
