A poppy from Leslie, South Carolina

Posted on |

I planted a southeastern native wildflower seed mix packet this spring and this is one of the flowers that came up. I tried to reverse google image search but could only find a European poppy. (No, I didn’t keep the seed packet. That would have been a good idea). Can you help? (There were other colors too…white and pink)

Hi Leslie,

this is certainly a poppy, and most probably one of the many color variants of Papaver rhoeas, which is sometimes included in wildflower mixes, though it is not a native plant.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D. Botanist SCNPS
