A leather flower from daniel in SC

I live in Greenville, SC and this wild plant grows in a field beside my house. Do you know the name of this plant? Thanks !

Hi Daniel,

great picture!  This is a native clematis, most likely Clematis viorna, the leather flower, which grows as a vine.  It is usually found on more basic soils, so you may be in an area with soil less acid than usual, in which you can get some uncommon species.  This one is rather widespread in the Upstate and mountains, but it is always a nice find.  Many people cultivate it as well.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
