a Hydrangea from Stephanie, South Carolina

Found at Litchfield Beach in full sun.

Hi Stephanie,

this is one of the cultivated varieties of Hydrangea.  At first it reminded me of Hydrangea paniculata, but the flower clusters are too flat. Our native species, Hydrangea arborescens, has larger and thinner leaves than yours. So I’m not sure what to call it other than a delicate hydrangea cultivar.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D., Botanist, SCNPS
