“Conestee Nature Preserve: A World Apart in the Middle of it All”

Michael has spent most of his career as an environmental lawyer, working a decade for an organization dedicated to using the legal system to protect environmental resources. In January 2021, he left that role to take over leadership of the organization that owns and operates the Preserve. Prior to attending law school, Michael earned an engineering degree from Clemson University. He hails from Clinton, SC.

March 15 Zoom Meeting

For our March meeting, Michael will  present: “Conestee Nature Preserve: A World Apart in the Middle of it All” to introduce us to the preserve and its current initiatives.

Being only 6 miles from downtown Greenville, The Conestee Nature Preserve is an easy and accessible nature getaway for many people.  People of different ages and abilities can come to discover, learn, and explore along thirteen miles of trails.  Within its 400 acres, there is a great diversity of habitats where thousands of plant and animal species live and thrive.

Michael will be discussing collaborations between the preserve and the South Carolina Native Plant Society and initiatives at the preserve such as countering the “Nature-Deficit Disorder”.  This is the idea that some behavioral problems are caused by people spending much less time outdoors than they have in the past, especially as children.  Other initiatives at the preserve include balancing human enrichment with ecosystem function and shifting perspectives by connecting people with nature so they will value it more.
