It’s that time again for the free Native Plant Propagation course at the Upstate Native Nursery. We had to set aside this SCNPS favorite due to Covid for the past year and are pleased to announce the upcoming course at the Upstate Native Nursery. The three-hour course includes the basics of both sexual and asexual (vegetative) plant reproduction and hands-on propagation. The same course will be held at two different times.
Instructors Miller Putnam and Jon Fritz will guide you in the planting of your own seed flat from our Upstate Native Seed Bank. You’ll learn methods for bringing seeds out of dormancy (i.e., scarification, stratification), and through germination using a variety of recipes of soil, light, water, time and temperature.
Next, they’ll demonstrate vegetative propagation (asexual) using a variety of methods including cuttings (root, leaf and stem), layering, and division.
Each attendee will be encouraged to take their own flat home and nurture it through germination and potting up. It’s not unusual for our propagation students to become Greenhouse Gang volunteers and be around to see their ‘babies’ in a plant sale a year or more later.
Classes will be limited to 12-14 participants. We’re holding two identical classes at different times to accommodate attendees’ schedules.
Parking is limited, if you’re coming with a friend or family, please bring one vehicle.
