Parks Mill Open House: Now Cancelled.
May 16 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Parks Mill Open house cancelled. Please see below for alternate way to view the plants this year.
We recently announced the annual Open House at the Parks Mill Rocky Shoals Spiderlily Preservation site near Plum Branch on Stevens Creek, to be held on Saturday, May 16. Regretfully, considering COVID-19 travel restrictions issued by Governor McMaster, we must cancel this event. If you have signed up via e-mail to attend, you will receive a return e-mail confirming the cancellation.
What we will do instead, is put together a Virtual Open House for presentation on the Internet. A couple of us will travel down to Parks Mill just before May 16 and shoot photos and videos of the Site and the Spiderlilies for assembling into a webpage to be posted on the SC Native Plant and Naturaland Trust websites. We will make the URLs for these webpages widely available to interested groups.
So, you will be able to continue “sheltering in place” and still experience the wonder of this Site and the Lilies at their peak. You will be able to see the majesty of the creek valley, hear the babble of the Creek, see some wildlife, and experience the Mill itself, while avoiding contact with those little pesky wildlife, the ticks!
So watch for the release of the webpage link, stay in, wear your masks and gloves, and be safe!
SC Native Plant Society and Naturaland Trust
Statewide Parks Mill Lilies Open House on Saturday, May 16. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED
The SC Native Plant Society and the Naturaland Trust have secured the ownership of the Parks Mill Rocky Shoals Spider lily site on Stevens Creek in McCormick County. We are now engaged in preserving the site for posterity. There has been a large amount of interest by the public in learning more about the Site and our lilies preservation project. In May 2017 we held our first Open House event at the Site during the peak bloom season of the lilies. Since that time we have been scheduling an annual Stevens Creek Lilies Open House. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2020.
Members of the SC Native Plant Society and other environmental organizations, as well as the general public, will be able to step onto the historic grist mill site and view the lilies in their full glory. There will be Native Plant Society members present to serve as guides and to answer questions during the hours of 10:00 till 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:00 on Saturday, May 16. We will make brief presentations on the lilies’ preservation and ongoing efforts to stabilize the historic mill facility. As there is very limited parking at the site, we ask that visitor groups indicate their preference for the morning or afternoon time slot, and that rigorous carpooling be observed.
The Site is located on SC Rt. 283, about 2.5 miles east of Plum Branch, where Stevens Creek flows under the Stevens Creek bridge. If you are heading east from Plum Branch, the entrance is on your right, about 100 yards before you reach the Bridge. There is limited parking on site, so you can park in Plum Branch in the parking lot between the Bracknell’s/E.C. Rice store building and the railroad. We will have a shuttle vehicle on call to ferry folks to and from the parking lot to the Mill site. You can call 864 979 3169 to request a shuttle.
If you are planning to attend the Open House, please send an e-mail to [email protected] indicating whether you are planning to attend the 10:00 slot or the 1:00 slot, and the number of people in your party.
