Native Plant Rescue
October 16 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
On October 16th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, we will have a native plant rescue volunteer workday on SC 107 above Oconee State Park and about half way between Cheohee Rd. and Cherry Hill Recreation Area (approximate address is 1219 SC-107 Mountain Rest, South Carolina). A private pond property of 7 acres was purchased last year by the Naturaland Trust and was drained by the SC Dept. of Natural Resources. Before they remove the dam, we need to rescue the plants on the dam and place them along the stream for erosion control.
Pots will be on-hand for transferring plants (Yellowroot, wetland shrubs, rhododendrons, mountain laurel, ferns, mints, doghobble and ginger), so all is needed is some volunteers with digging tools, water and appropriate clothing. There may be several plants that volunteers can take home. This project will combine the efforts of Naturaland Trust, DNR, Trout Unlimited, USFS, Upstate Master Naturalists and the Upstate Native Plant Society. Join us in this rescue operation before the dam and all remaining plants are removed at at later date. For more information, contact Dan Whitten at [email protected].
This site is on the left as you travel North on SC 107 and is 5.2 miles past the entrance to Oconee State Park.
