Lecture #5: Climate, Invasives, and Trees, oh my! Forest Management in the “New Normal”

Speaker: Dr. David Coyle, Clemson University

Description: Native North American forests are subject to changing environmental conditions and a seemingly endless line of invasive species, yet still need active management to remain healthy and productive. What strategies can forest managers use to manage our diverse southern forests in the face of these challenges? We will discuss the impacts and interactions of climate change and invasive species, and what it means for forest health in the Southeast.

Speaker Bio: Dr. David Coyle is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation at Clemson University. His Extension Forestry program focuses on forest and tree health and invasive species management in natural and managed landscapes across the Southeast. Dave often uses social media as a teaching tool for forest health, and you can find Dave’s forest health outreach work on Twitter (@drdavecoyle) or Instagram (drdavecoyle) where he regularly posts about invasive pests and all things related to trees. Dave’s research activities include finding better control methods for invasive plants in forests, evaluating novel bark beetle management strategies, and investigating new Asian longhorned beetle management methods. Previously, Dave ran the Southern Regional Extension Forestry – Forest Health and Invasive Species program, which provided hands-on training, electronic resources, and other services pertaining to management of native and invasive forest insects, plants, and diseases to forestry professionals throughout the southeastern U.S. Dave grew up on a farm in Harmony, MN and completed his B.A. in Biology at Luther College, a M.S. in Entomology and Forestry at Iowa State University, and a PhD in Entomology at the University of Wisconsin. Dave is Past-President of the North American Invasive Species Management Association, is on the South Carolina Invasive Species Advisory Committee, and the Advisory Committee for the South Carolina Exotic Plant Pest Council.
