Outdoor Learning Sessions, 2:30-4:30 PM

On Saturday we’ll be featuring four in-person rotating half-hour sessions at Fort Johnson, a scenic SC Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) property located on the Charleston Harbor in James Island. Everyone who attends will have the opportunity to participate in the following four sessions:

  • EV Bell from SC Sea Grant and Michael Hodges from SCDNR sharing on-site examples of oyster reef and salt marsh restoration, as well as information about the From Seeds to Shoreline education and restoration program
  • April Punsalan from Yahola Herbal School will be offering samples of three teas brewed with native plant ingredients, and will bring fresh plant material so that participants can learn about medicinal plants in person
  • Kim Morganello and Guinn Wallover from Clemson Cooperative Extension will share information about on-site rain gardens and an HVAC condensation garden. This session will provide site assessment techniques as well as guidance for how to put plants to work to manage water and provide for a healthy environment.
  • Billy McCord from SCDNR will share information about winter-resident monarch butterflies in coastal South Carolina, and how monarch tagging contributes to our understanding of population size and movement patterns. If the weather and monarchs cooperate, Billy will provide live tagging demonstrations as well!

SCNPS Social, 4:30-6:00 PM

  • Join us for relaxed socializing and networking in a lovely outdoor setting!
  • Appetizers and beverages will be provided.
