Midlands Spring Native Plant Sale!
Saturday, April 13, 2024

10 am – 4 pm
We return to Canoeing for Kids HQ in Lexington, a gem of a spot on the Saluda river.

Come shop for the South Carolina plants that belong in this ecosystem, bringing beauty to your garden and essential food for SC pollinators and wildlife. The sale focuses on blooming perennials, grasses, and our favorite smaller blooming shrubs and trees–all native of course.

Mini Plant Talks: Hourly starting at 11:30

We’ll speak briefly on native plant topics like right plant-right place, designing with nature, and planting with nature’s layers. Columbia Audubon will present Grow a Birdfeeder.

Shop for native plant books too with Columbia’s All Good Books!

Artist Candace Thibeaux returns this year with watercolors painted with plant based pigment.

Midlands Spring 2023 Native Plant Sale

 

 

Come find the native plants that feed pollinators and birds, and bring some nature home! Shrubs, perennials, grasses, and vines are selected to thrive in the Midlands.

 Get the plant list here. Prices range $3-$20. Pay with cash or credit. BYO wagon is ok.

In addition to our sale plants, two local vendors will be here: Sal’s Old Timey Feed & Seed and Native Plants to the People. Chapter member Clay Parker has grown a variety of milkweed species (and more) just for the sale. There will be a great selection for a variety of soil and sun conditions!

It’ll be a festival atmosphere with food, art, and books for sale! Read more below.

Get a bite to eat from The Wurst Wagen. Find plant-based art from Candace Thibeault. Buy a native plant book from Columbia’s independent shop, All Good Books. Get a bluebird house and conservation info from Columbia Audubon Society.

Volunteers Needed

Set up on Friday, April 14 and during the sale!
Volunteers can purchase plants early. Contact mnpsplantsale@gmail.com to sign up or with questions.

  • Set Up Crew unloads plants from delivery trucks, places them according to a map, and installs plant signs on Friday during the day.
  • Cashier and Tally work together at the checkout to count up plants and prices, run credit cards, make change, and provide receipts.
  • Information Table hands out brochures and discusses how to learn more about native plants
  • Plant Helpers use wagons to move plants and will be assigned a list of about 5 plants to read up on and be ready to answer customer questions.

Midlands Spring Native Plant Sale March 25-26, 2022

The Midlands Chapter will host its spring plant sale March 25 & 26, 2022, at the Historic Robert Mills House in Columbia.

PLANT SELECTION LIST

We are once again partnering with the Historic Columbia Foundation, which will offer tours of the grounds. You’ll get to see some of the same natives offered at the sale growing at Robert Mills House gardens. Tours begin at 4:00 pm on Friday and 11:00 am on Saturday.
In addition, SC Native Plant Society members will stage educational demonstrations during the sale.

New this sale: Sal’s Old Timey Feed and Seed will join us to offer great natives for sale.

Lowcountry: Plant Sale Pre-order Instructions and List

Members will be able to pre-order plants between Tuesday February 23 and Sunday February 28.  If you are not a current member, you will need to join on or before Monday February 22 to participate in this pre-order.  You can do so online at https://scnps.org/scnps-membership

Here is the list of available plants for members only to pre-order for the Spring 2021 plant sale.  Place your order by emailing Sydney Taylor at bees@rootsandshootsnursery.com.  Please put “Spring Native Plant Order” in the subject line, and include your full name and phone number in the message.  If someone else will be picking up your order, please include that information too.

For each plant ordered be sure to include:

  • Common and botanical name of plant (variety if applicable)
  • Size of pot
  • Quantity

There is a minimum of 10 plants per order, and a maximum of 25 plants per order.  A maximum of 20 orders will be taken.  Within two weeks of placing your order, you will receive an email from Sydney Taylor confirming the order and stating the total cost.  Note: quantities are not guaranteed.  Orders will be filled on a first come, first-served basis.  If we reach a maximum capacity, we will stop taking new pre-orders.

You will be able to pickup your pre-ordered plants at Roots and Shoots Nursery (1108 Wappoo Road, Charleston SC, 843-633-1429) from Saturday, March 27 to Friday, April 2 during open hours which is 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Tuesday- Friday and 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

Cash or checks made out to “Roots and Shoots Nursery” will be the only payment methods taken.

If you are not able to pick up your order between these dates and times and make payment by cash or check please do not place an order!  To pay for your plants at pick-up please bring cash or a check made out to “Roots and Shoots Nursery” for the total cost stated in Sydney’s confirmation email.

We have a great selection of native plants with many hard-to-find species — colorful perennials, shrubs, trees, grasses, ferns and edibles. Cash, check, or credit card accepted. Admission to the plant sale is free. If you wish to explore Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, please pay admission in the Visitor Center.

LOWCOUNTRY: Roots and Shoots Open House – Saturday, October 11

Greetings, Gardeners!
If you missed the Native Plant Society sale on Saturday, you can still catch our Fall Open House.  We have lots of wonderful native shrubs, perennial flowers, vines, and grasses as well as a handful of non-native plants we consider special. Check the website for the current offerings with color pictures. Now is the perfect planting time, so come on over!

Directions:
To get to our backyard nursery,  Roots and Shoots:
1. Take the Glenn McConnell exit from I-526.  You’ll land at a light with Home Depot/McDonalds.
2. Turn right at the light onto Magwood.  Go to the end to where it T’s with Ashley River Rd. (Highway 61)
3. Turn left at the light onto Ashley River Rd.
4. Go through one more light
5. Look for the landmarks for a right turn:  Jiffy Lube on the left and Timbo’s Peanuts and Fireworks/Vegetable stand on the right
6.  Turn right at that intersection onto Pierpont Ave (there’s no light)
7.  Beware! Pierpont turns right in a block or so.  Stay on it.  Follow the curves and look for a little sign on your left that says “The Bluff”
8. Turn left at that sign into our gravel driveway.  You cannot see the house from the road.  2196 Pierpont
*The numbers on the street are crazy.  Ignore them and look for the little sign on your left.
Coming from points north on Highway 61
1. Pass Bees Ferry Rd
2. Cross Church Creek
3. Pass the CVS on your left and begin to look for the landmarks above (#5),
4. Turn Left onto Pierpont then as above
