The Advancing Front of Invasive Species:
Early Detection Rapid Response and Exotic Plant Management Team
Efforts to Control Spread
Speaker: Dr. Lauren Serra
Non-native invasive plant species can threaten and alter both natural and cultural resources. Key to protecting these resources are recognizing invasive species’ potential for spread and finding new introductions.
Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) of invasive species on the move is a focus of Exotic Plant Management Team efforts around the country.
Our speaker, Dr Lauren Serra, is liaison for the Southeast Coast Exotic Plant Management Team (SEC-EPMT), which is stationed at Congaree National Park and serves 15 National Park Service sites across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama. The SEC-EPMT has controlled new invasions at Congaree, Cumberland Island National Seashore, and is actively working to stop the spread of new infestations at Fort Pulaski National Monument.
EPMTs provide outreach to local communities, including a collaborative effort on early detection at the 2016 Wings Across South Carolina BioBlitz.
Serra will talk about invasive plants that may be on our doorstep and how we can share our observations.
The meeting is at Landrum Depot, 211 North Trade, Landrum, SC, starting at 7 pm. Arrive at 6:30 for refreshments and socializing before the meeting. The meeting is free and open to the public.
