A yellow honeysuckle from Ken in SC

Posted on |

Saw a Giant Cloudless Sulfur land on this on Sunday. I was surprised to see flowers, and even more surprised at what appears to be a type of honeysuckle??? Leaves don’t look right for Lonicera flava, but do look like honeysuckle to me. Help!

Ken,

the image does look like Lonicera flava to me – but seems to be flowering out of season. I am not 100 % sure that it is this species, though.  Lonicera flava is an uncommon native vine found mostly on the granitic mountains of the foothills in Pickens and Greenville counties.  It usually flowers in the spring.  I’m not sure what else it could be.  It might help if I knew its location.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill
