White sweet clover from Virginia in SC

Posted on |

I’ve been sorting through old photos, and found some of this plant that was growing between the road and a marsh. The photos are from March of last year.

Hi Virginia,

now that we have the flowers, I can say that this is white sweet clover, Melilotus alba, a non-native plant often found in disturbed areas and pastures.  The other sweet clover you posted is very likely the same species.

Sincerely,

Steven Hill, Ph.D., Botanist, SCNPS
