A shelf mushroom from Angela South Carolina

Posted on |

These were found on an oak in my front yard, moderate to dappled shade, in the middle of September. I wonder not only what they are, but how to safely remove them and if they will hurt the tree.
Thank you for your response in this matter.
Sincerely, Angela Kollet

Hi Angela,

this is a fungus, perhaps the horseshoe shelf mushroom, but I do not know the fungi well enough to be certain.  I thought they mostly grew on dead oaks, and I do not think that they will harm a living tree.

Sincerely,
