Sesbania herbacea from Patty in SC

Posted on |

This plant is a volunteer that came up in my flower bed. It is exotic-looking so we let it grow to see what would happen. Would love to know what it is.

Hi Patty,

This is a plant in the bean family called Sesbania herbacea.  I think they are attractive, and they appear to be native. It could have come in with birdseed, however. It is an annual that grows very quickly.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven R. Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
