A sage? Debbie, South Carolina

Posted on |

our neighbor gave us two of these plants last year, but could not remember what they were. We kept them in the garage for the winter and think we may want to plamt them. Can you help identify them?

Hi Debbie,

this is difficult for me  – it is a cultivated plant.  I can only guess.  My guess is that it is a type of Salvia, possibly clary sage – Salvia sclerea, in the mint family.  It would be best to resubmit when it flowers to be sure.  I could even have the plant family wrong – it also could be in the Asteraceae. Yes, do plant them out in a garden with good light.

Sincerely,
