A possible Black-eyed Susan species from Monika in South Carolina

Posted on |

I noticed the plant in spring coming up where I walk. I did not plant this and tried to search for native plants but unable to identify it. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi Monika,

at this stage my best guess is that this is Rudbeckia laciniata, one of the black-eyed Susans. We have a native form in our area, but there is also a cultivar that is frequently grown, called Goldsturm, as I remember.  When it flowers, if this doesn’t seem right, please post again.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, botanist, SCNPS
