Peppergrass from Katherine in SC

Found near a horse pasture in Charleston SC

Little seed-like pods

Hi Katherine,

these are the fruits / seed pods of peppergrass, in the genus Lepidium.  The most common species is Lepidium virginicum, and that is most likely this one.  The whole plant is a bit peppery to the taste, mostly when young.  These are very common weedy native annuals or biennials.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven R. Hill, Botanist SCNPS
