An oak gall from Mary, SC

Posted on |

What is this furry growth addition on this oak sapling, growing in dry, sandy soil?

Hi Mary,

I think the oak is Quercus margaretta, the scrubby post oak, but the furry growths are insect galls, possibly from a wasp, but I don’t know which insect caused these to form. I suggest you look up “Oak galls” on Google to see the various types of galls.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D., Botanist, SCNPS
