A native orchid from Gina in SC

Posted on |

I found this growing very low to the ground in the woods behind our house in upstate SC. I almost stepped on it but stopped to dig it up because the foilage is so pretty and unique for our wooded area. I was thinking it might be in the violet family but probably not as those are more tropical

Hi Gina,

your plant is one of our native orchids, named Goodyera pubescens.  I always used to call it Rattlesnake orchid.  It has small white orchid flowers in the summer, usually, and it is evergreen.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
