Mugwort from Garrison in SC

Posted on |

This plant smells of herb (not sure which exactly maybe a sage?). The top side of the leaves are green while the underside is a white green, almost pastel in color. I find the plant growing in and around some bushes near my pool. My soil is a reddish mud if that helps. Since I love to cook, I was hoping to see if this plant is edible and if it is a type of herb?

Hi Garrison,

your plant is called mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris. While usually considered a weed, mugwort does have a long medicinal history. The following internet site has information on the history and methods of its use. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/m/mugwor61.html  It is not native to North America but it is widely naturalized.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
