Mikania scandens from Stacy in SC

Posted on |

Found in my asiatic jasmine, deep shade. Fall blooming, current height ~ 24in. Thought it was White Snakeroot, but the leaves are smooth.

Hi Stacy,

this is a native wildflower, a vine, called Mikania scandens, the climbing hempweed. It is not at all related to hemp, but is closely related to Eupatorium, which contains Joe-pye weed and White snakeroot. in the Aster family. As I remember, the flowers can be very sweetly fragrant. Vines are not very common in this plant family.
