I found this plant while hiking at Lee Falls in Walhalla, SC. It was growing very close to a stream bed and was found under heavy shade.

your plant is a young frond of the maidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum, a fern of nice rich moist forests. Each plant will have a few of these delicate fronds, or leaves.
