Hydrocotyle umbellata from Leslie Dyal South Carolina

Posted on |

Its growing around my fence lines of my horses’ area. Loves moisture and horse poop. It was hard to find flowers, only a small portion of the population is currently flowering. The horses sample it from time to time and I want to ID it so I can make sure its not harmful to ingest.

Hi Leslie,

this is Hydrocotyle umbellata, one of the pennyworts. It has been known to be somewhat toxic to children, but I do not know about horses.  I would investigate it further on the internet now that you know its name. This site will give some more information: https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=hyum
