A Helianthus from Diane P, SC

Posted on |

Hi, Dr. Hill,
This flower is growing on a rural road in a moist depression, full sun in the Piedmont. I photographed it on Aug. 23. I hope you can identify it for me.
Thank you very much.

Hi Diane,

the sunflowers, genus Helianthus, can be very difficult to identify. My best guess on this one is Helianthus microcephalus, mostly because of the small flower heads. I’m only about 70 % confident on this one! We have at least 24 species of Helianthus in the Carolinas.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D, Botanist, SCNPS
