Deerberry from Mary in SC

Posted on |

Is this miniature/approximate quarter size flower a member of the hummingbird/trumpet vine family (sandy soil, dry site)?

Hi Mary,

this plant is called Deerberry, Vaccinium stamineum, and it is rather common in drier forests in the upstate and elsewhere.  It is related to the edible blueberries, but the fruit is not at all tasty to us.  The family is Ericaceae, the heath family.

Sincerely,
