Chaenomeles from Megan /South Carolina

Posted on |

This little orange flower popped up in my grass yesterday. It kind of reminds me of a poppy, but its not quite right. I would like to dig it up and replant it, but would like to know what it is first. Please help! Thank you.

Hi Megan,

this appears to be a flower from the flowering quince, Chaenomeles japonica. If it is short, the shrub was probably mowed and has a large underground root system. This introduced shrub usually grows to about 6 feet tall and wide.
