Hi, Dr. Hill,
This plant was photographed in the Fall Line region on July 22 in woods with mixed hardwood and pine, mostly shady (morning sun). It sent up a rather nondescript panicle (photo included) in mid-April. Thank you for your time.
Hi Diane,
this plant is called Heuchera americana, or alum root. It is occasional in meadows and forest edges, and has a long history of medicinal uses. A nice native wildflower, and nice pictures of it!
Sincerely,
Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
