A mystery plant from Ralph, South Carolina

This plant grew unexpectedly in one of my planters on my rear deck. As you can see it has take over the entire planter. Please provide your help to identify.
Thank You,
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

this plant is somewhat mysterious to me.  It looks like a Hibiscus, but the only way a hibiscus would take over a planter is if someone put lots of seeds in its soil.  The only other possibility that comes to mind is one of the cultivars of the sweet potato – which would take over a planter like this – but I really think this is unlikely.  I’m sort of covering myself by saying this – it might be a good idea to post more pictures of the plant as it develops. At his point, I am unable to give you a positive identification.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
