A Hymenocallis from Virginia in SC

Posted on |

These are passalong Spider Lilies, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to determine the species of Hymenocallis from these photos. And if it isn’t clear, can you tell me what to look for to determine the ID?

Many thanks for all your help,
Virginia in Charleston

Hi Virginia,

I am not sure which species this is. Hymenocallis crassifolia has 3 or fewer flowers in an umbel, and H. occidentalis has more than 3 in an umbel, but there are several other possibilities in your area. They look so similar!  Leaf width can also be used to help distinguish them.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D., Botanist, SCNPS
